There are many ways to get into Aalto BIZ, and to reflect that, there are corresponding tutor types for each group of new students. Each group of mursus and marsus has their own peculiarities and stuff to take into account, learn more about them below!
Bachelor's students
New students without prior studies at BIZ. The new mursus have an exciting year ahead of them, filled with fun events, activities and – of course – studies. By the end of their first academic year, they'll get to choose a major and specialize in one of the seven majors that Aalto School of Business offers:
Please make sure to talk about all majors equally. Even if you believe your own major to be the best thing Aalto BIZ has to offer, let the new mursus decide what they like and are interested themselves.
Open university students
Open Uni students refers to new mursus, who have already completed 60 study credits worth of BIZ courses in Open University or in some other university in Finland.
They already have selected a major and start the academic year technically as second-year-students. Open Uni students will most likely have a pretty good idea of the technicalities and general info about studies.
If your Mursu has any questions about their programme or studies in general, you instruct them to:
Economics students
The new Economics students have applied to the Economics programme separately (different from "regular" Bachelor's programme, which is in Finnish). The entire programme is taught in English.
Because the programme is taught in English, there is a chance that you'll have an international student or two in your tutor group. If this is the case, make sure that the whole tutor group speaks English. By doing so, you are ensuring that everyone feels welcome in the group and understands what's going on.
You wouldn't want to be a part of a conversation that you couldn't understand, and best believe, others don't want that either. So make sure both tutors and other new students remember to be considerate of possible international students.
Economics students have a different curriculum than other Bachelor's students. If you are tutoring an Economics group, but are not studying Economics yourself, you can find more information on aalto.fi and the Student Guide.
Master's students
There are various "types" of Master's students. Depending on their academic background, Master's students can have varying foreknowledge about studying at Aalto University or a Finnish university in general.
Students holding a Bachelor's degree outside Aalto University.
Because all Master's programmes except Corporate Law are completely in English, there is a possibility that you'll have international Marsus. If this is the case, make sure to that the whole group speaks English.
If you have an international Marsu who needs help with any technicalities regarding school or living in Finland, don't hesitate to ask questions from the university or Tutor Committee!
EXCHANGE students
International students do not come here just to study, but to also learn about a new culture. Remember that they might need a bit more assistance and help with matter that might seem obvious to Finnish people.
Take your international students to parties and events, and introduce them to club activities (attend some non- alcoholic events as well). International students can also get involved in volunteering. Speak English at all tutor meeting and make sure others do the same. Ensure that everyone feels a part of the group!
International students come from various countries and many cultural differences may be encountered. To avoid misunderstandings, teach international students about Finnish culture and what is ok and what is not, especially at parties. Also, remember to ask about their culture as well!
The Travel Plan is an Excel spreadsheet that the Student Exchange Services gives to the Tutor Coordinator. The spreadsheet contains a list of all exchange students and their plans related to their exchange. It also states if the exchange student wants to be picked up at the railway station and/or if they want their (AYY/HOAS) apartment keys picked up for them. The Tutor Coordinator will distribute the Travel Plan information to Exchange Tutors. Each tutor will only receive the Travel Plans of their own exchange students.
One of the Exchange Tutor's responsibilities has been picking up their exchangees from the airport. However, we've made a slight change to that and nowadays the Exchange tutors are required to only pick up their exchangees from the Helsinki Central Railway Station. This is one the reasons Exchange Tutors get the higher compensation (200€) for tutoring and the pick-up service is mandatory.
NOTE! Please make sure that your exchange student knows before the departure where to meet you.
Exchange students can indicate on their Travel Plan that they want someone to pick up keys to their AYY or HOAS apartment in advance. Picking up keys for the AYY apartments can be done at the AYY Central Office (KETO) by each tutor. However, only the Tutor Coordinator can pick up the HOAS keys from their office in Helsinki. So, the Tutor Coordinator will pick up all the HOAS keys and distribute them to the Exchange Tutors from Espilä etc. The technicalities will be shared later.
When the exchangee gets to their apartment, tutors should check with the exchangee that all keys work properly and the apartment is clean and habitable. Remind the exchange students that they have to fill out the housing inspection form within a week.
